Venus is retrograde from October 3 to November 13, 2026. Nothing breaks because of it. What tends to come up: old names resurfacing, a relationship you thought was settled asking one more honest question, a spending decision you keep circling back to. Six weeks to look again at what you already have, before you decide what’s next.

What it feels like

Picture someone who scrolls past an old contact’s name on a group chat and feels the whole shape of a year-old conversation come back at once, uninvited. Or someone standing in a store aisle, holding two things that cost the same, unable to tell if either one is actually wanted or just familiar. Nothing dramatic happens. A price gets checked twice. A message gets typed and not sent. The pause is the whole event.

When it starts and ends, exactly

Venus turns retrograde at 8 degrees Scorpio on October 3, 2026, and turns direct at 22 degrees Libra on November 13, 2026, per ephemeris data (Cafe Astrology, fetched 2026-09-16). Around October 25, Venus retrogrades back across the border into Libra, the sign it rules, so the back half of the retrograde runs through relationship and fairness questions specifically. It overlaps almost entirely with Mercury’s own retrograde this cycle (October 24 to November 13), so late October into mid-November carries both at once. That does not double the effect. It means two different areas, communication and Mercury’s territory, values and Venus’s, are both asking to be looked at again in the same stretch.

What Venus actually governs

Venus is what you’re drawn to and what you think something is worth: money, taste, comfort, who you let close. Not romance alone. A retrograde doesn’t reverse any of that. It slows the review down. The pull is to re-examine a value you’ve been taking for granted, not to invent a new one from nothing. For what Venus means in your own birth chart, see Venus in astrology.

What tends to come up during a Venus retrograde

Three things show up often enough to be worth naming plainly, not as a guarantee:

  • An old connection resurfaces. An ex texts, an old friend reappears, a former job comes back around as an offer or a rumor. The retrograde doesn’t cause this. It’s the season where unfinished business tends to get another look.
  • A purchase or a taste you’re unsure about. Buyer’s remorse spikes during Venus retrogrades for a reason: the planet governing what feels worth it is turned inward, re-checking its own judgment. If you can wait six weeks on a big purchase, it costs you nothing to wait.
  • A relationship question you’d rather not reopen. Not because the retrograde manufactures conflict, but because the parts of a relationship you’ve been avoiding are exactly what a slower, more reflective season tends to surface.

None of this is fixed. A blueprint shows the shape of a house and the rooms you are meant to live in. It does not script a single step you take inside them. Venus retrograde is the season for walking back through the rooms you already built, not proof that any of them are wrong.

What to actually do with it

  • Delay big Venus decisions where you can. A major purchase, a relationship-defining conversation, a tattoo. Not because the outcome would be doomed, only because you’re reviewing with less certainty than usual, and certainty is the thing this decision needs.
  • Let the old contact resurface without deciding anything on the spot. You don’t owe a response in the moment it lands. You can sit with what it brought up first.
  • Use the six weeks for a values check-in, not a verdict. What are you actually spending money, time, and attention on right now, and does it still track with what you say matters.

Is Venus retrograde bad luck

No. Nothing in a chart is bad luck; a retrograde is a period of review, not a curse. The worry comes from treating a normal planetary cycle (Venus does this roughly every 18 months) as an omen. Three or four times a year, some planet is retrograde. Venus in particular spends about 40 days a year moving backward from Earth’s point of view. Nothing about the mechanics makes a season fated to go badly.

Questions people ask about Venus retrograde

Is it safe to start a new relationship during Venus retrograde? Nothing stops a relationship starting well during any transit. The honest caution: this is a season for re-examining what you already value, so a new connection started here is worth revisiting once the retrograde ends, to see if the read holds up in ordinary light.

Should I avoid buying anything during Venus retrograde? Not avoid, delay where you reasonably can. If a purchase can wait six weeks, waiting costs nothing and lets your judgment settle. If it can’t wait, buy it and don’t treat any buyer’s remorse afterward as proof the retrograde “caused” a bad decision.

Why do exes come back during Venus retrograde? They don’t, categorically. What’s true: this is the season people are more likely to look back at something unfinished, so an old contact resurfacing lines up with the pattern more often than chance alone would suggest. It’s a tendency, not a rule.

Does Venus retrograde affect existing relationships? It tends to surface what’s already there rather than create new problems. A relationship on solid ground usually feels this as a quieter, more reflective stretch. One with an avoided question underneath it may feel that question get louder.

How is this different from Mercury retrograde, since they overlap this year? Mercury governs communication and logistics: the crossed wires, the delayed reply, the double-booked meeting. Venus governs values and connection: what you want and what you think something is worth. This cycle, both are retrograde from October 24 to November 13, so expect both kinds of static in the same window. See the companion guide on Mercury retrograde. Every other date this year is in the astrology calendar.

When the review is worth doing properly

Six weeks of noticing what resurfaces is useful on its own. Some of what comes up in a Venus retrograde season, though, is bigger than a season, a relationship pattern you keep meeting in different people, a value you inherited without choosing. If that’s what’s surfacing, a longer look helps.
