How to Calculate Your Personal Year Number

To calculate your Personal Year number, do three small sums: reduce your birth month to one digit, reduce your birth day to one digit, reduce the current year to one digit, then add the three and reduce once more to a number from 1 to 9. That number is the season you are in. Here is the whole method, worked out, plus the Personal Month underneath it and the one honest caveat most guides skip.

The steps to calculate your Personal Year number
Four small sums, done in order:
- Reduce your birth month. January is 1, December is 12 which becomes 3 (1+2). A March birthday is simply 3.
- Reduce your birth day. The 14th becomes 5 (1+4). The 28th becomes 1 (2+8 = 10, then 1+0).
- Reduce the current year. 2026 becomes 1 (2+0+2+6 = 10, then 1+0). 2027 becomes 2.
- Add the three reduced numbers, then reduce once more. If the total is two digits, add those digits together until you land on 1 through 9.
That final digit is your Personal Year.
A worked example
Take a birthday of March 14, and the year 2026.
- Birth month: March is 3.
- Birth day: 14 becomes 5 (1+4).
- Year: 2026 becomes 1 (2+0+2+6 = 10, then 1).
- Add them: 3 + 5 + 1 = 9.
A Personal Year 9. The season of endings and clearing space. To read what that season asks, go to the Personal Year 9 guide, or find your own number in the nine-year cycle overview.

A note on master numbers
If a step lands you on 11, 22, or 33 before the final reduction, some numerologists pause there, as those are “master numbers” elsewhere in a chart. For the Personal Year specifically, the common practice, and ours, is to reduce all the way to 1 through 9.
The season reads more cleanly as a single digit. If you are curious about the heightened flavor, our Personal Year 2 and Personal Year 4 guides note where an 11 or 22 can color the year.
The Personal Month, one layer down
Once you have your Personal Year, you can zoom in. Your Personal Month is your Personal Year number plus the calendar month number, reduced to a single digit.
In a Personal Year 9, the sixth month (June) gives a Personal Month of 6 (9 + 6 = 15, then 1+5). It reads like a smaller echo of the year’s themes: a 6 month inside a 9 year is a good stretch for the tender, relational side of an ending. Personal Months are for texture and timing, choosing when to push and when to rest, not for big decisions on their own.
You can go one layer deeper still, to the Personal Day (Personal Month plus the calendar date, reduced), which is useful for scheduling a launch or a hard conversation, and not much more. The year is where the real story is.
When does the year change over?
Worth knowing before you trust the number to a date. Numerologists disagree: some run the Personal Year on the calendar (January 1 to December 31), some run it birthday to birthday, and some treat the turn as a gradual fade over the months around it.
We calculate on the calendar year for consistency, which is what the method above gives you. If your birthday sits far from January, do not be surprised if the new year feels like it arrives closer to your birthday.

Questions people ask
What Personal Year am I in? Run the three sums above for the current year, or let your free Essence chart do it. Then read the matching guide from the nine-year cycle overview.
Do I use my birth year in the calculation? No. You use your birth month and birth day, plus the current year. Your birth year belongs to your Life Path, a different number.
What if I get a two-digit total? Reduce it: add the two digits together, and keep going until you have a single digit from 1 to 9.
Does the Personal Year start on my birthday or January 1? Sources genuinely differ. We use January 1; the hub lays out all three positions so you can decide what fits you.
Once you know your number
The calculation is the easy part. Living the year well is the rest.
Start with your Personal Year guide from the nine-year cycle overview. If the season ahead is a turning point, a Life Direction reading reads your numbers against your birth chart and the year you are actually in.
